Matariki Kites

What a fabulous end to Term 2! We had lots of fun using some of the things we learnt through our Inquiry to design and make our Matariki Kites. We spent an afternoon flying our kites with the rest of the Junior School - see the school website for a video! Here we all are with our super Birdman kites!

Paper Folding Problem

Here's a problem we investigated in Room 21.

Can you fold a square of paper to show:
2 rectangles?
4 squares?
2 triangles?

That's easy! These ones are more challenging:
Can you fold a piece of paper to show:

3 rectangles?
3 triangles?
Rectangles and triangles?

How many ways can you find to solve these problems?

Have worked them out yet?

Here's one solution:

Why is in the sun sometimes in our eyes when we sit on the mat?
What are we doing with our shadows?

Read all about it on our Inquiry page!

Term 2

Term 2 is well underway and we are very busy inquiring into our BIG question "How are New Zealanders connected to the sun and the moon?" We are learning all about the Science aspects of the sun and the moon and looking at our big question from a Social Science aspect as well. Our Visual Art Inquiry carries on this term with a focus on Maori Art. This ties in beautifully with our learning about Maori myths and legends that are about the sun and moon, especially Matariki. Watch this space for more on this and check out our Inquiry page for some examples of our work so far!

Verbal/Linguistic Intelligence - cut out letters to spell the name of an important person at our school
Visual/Spatial Intelligence - create a picture of your family
Musical/ Rhythmical Intelligence - create a song, rap or music to accompany our expectations

Intrapersonal Intelligence - use playdough to make a modelof your best friend
Naturalist Intelligence - classify some natural things and say how they are connected

Giant Sunflower

Look at this enormous sunflower!
It is 17 of Samantha's feet long!
We used our senses (Habit of Mind - Gathering Data through all senses) to think of describing words to show what the sunflower:
looks like
feels like
smells like
sounds like
(we did not find out what it tastes like!)
We used bubbl.us to brainstorm our words:
