Sometimes when we sit on the mat the sun is in our eyes. Later in the day it isn't. We wanted to know:
Why is this? We decided to find out!
We carried out an investigation into our shadows. We already know that shadows are made when the sun (or light) can't get through an object. We thought that our shadows might give us some clues about what was happening with the sun through the day.
We worked in our house groups. One person stood very still while someone else drew around their shadow. We marked where they should stand so that they always stood in the same place. We drew around the shadows at 12, 1 and 2 o'clock. Look at the photos on the home page to see what happened. {we've got problems loading photos onto this page :(}
We turned our photos into a book and added a caption to explain what was happening in each picture. Come and see them in our classroom! We finished our books by making a connection between what happened to our shadows and what happens with the sun in our eyes on the mat.
Stewart House: At 12 o’clock we drew around our shadow. At 1 o’clock our shadow had moved. At 2 o’clock it moved more. Why did our shadow move? Because the earth spins. Our shadows got longer too. The sun is in our eyes sometimes on the mat because the earth spins and it looks like the sun moves.
Macmillan: The shadows moved through the day because the earth was spinning. The sun is in our eyes on the mat sometimes because the earth moves through the day.
Gledstanes: Our shadows move through the day because the earth spins. The sun stays still but the earth spins and our shadow moves. The sun is in our eyes sometimes because the earth spins.
Mulgan: The earth spins around so Paige’s shadow moved. The shadow was in a different place at 1 o’clock and 2 o’clock. The sun is in our eyes on the mat sometimes because the earth moves.
This year, our Inquiry learning will be linked to our concept:
Relationships - ERIC makes connections
To help us understand our concept, we made a web by passing a ball of wool around our sharing circle. We had to say how we were connected to the person we passed the wool to. We found out that we were connected in lots of different ways. We used our 'paper plate portraits' to make a display for our wall
